2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs 2018 BMW X3

Serving Cranberry Township, Beaver Falls, and Ross Township, PA

America’s love affair with compact luxury crossover SUVs is enduring. The best examples, which include the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio and 2018 BMW X3, offer an outstanding blend of nimble handling, high performance and a spacious interior. These two crossovers are definitely fun to drive, luxurious and capable. We urge you to test-drive both, because we’re confident you’ll prefer the passionate driving experience unique to the Stelvio.

Performance

The Alfa’s top engine, standard in the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, is a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 making 505 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission that distributes power to all four wheels. The three driving modes, dubbed Alfa DNA, are Dynamic, Natural and Advanced Efficiency. The best the BMW can muster is the M version of the X3, with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6 outputting a relatively modest 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, feeding an 8-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with AWD an extra-cost option.

Appearance

Let’s stipulate that the X3 is a nice-looking vehicle, and the M-version has a more aggressive appearance than the standard model. That being said, the X3’s appearance is no match for the flowing, sleek Stelvio, featuring a unique, long hood, upswept beltline, brawny rear end and sloped back window. In a word, the Stelvio design is passionate. The interiors of both vehicles are configured with two rows and seating for five. Many standard Alfa features, such as leather seating, wood trim and rear-view camera, are extra-cost options on the BMW.

Safety Features

Both vehicles are equipped with driver, passenger, front head curtain, front side, rear head curtain airbags, but only the Alfa also gives you driver and front passenger knee airbags. Stelvio packages together blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking with forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam assist, lane departure warning and hands-free tailgate. The X3 offers some, but not all of these features.
