With crossover SUV’s dominating the roads of the United States; it is no surprise that two legendary European automakers have entered the American market in recent years. Audi joined the competition in 2008 with its Q5, now in its second generation.

Alfa Romeo introduced its Stelvio crossover in 2016, and SUV buyers are taking notice. The long wait from concept vehicle to production model was worth the wait. Now in its third year, the 2019 model now offers rear wheel drive on the base model, optional paddle shifting in the Sport package and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Both SUV’s are well made and provide an excellent driving experience for the owner. Putting the two vehicles in a side-by-side comparison, this is what a prospective buyer may find.

Acceleration and Power

Both the 2019 Q5 and the Stelvio provide a 2.0L turbocharged engine for performance. Audi offers a smooth ride with good acceleration, reaching 60 mph in a respectable 6.2 seconds. Its 2.0L motor provides up to 248 HP and nearly 275 lbs. of torque.

The Stelvio gets a great deal of power out of its 2.0L engine, far more than one would expect from a four-cylinder. When the turbocharger kicks in, the Stelvio can produce up to 280 hp and over 300 lbs of torque. The top of the line Quadrifolgio package offers a 2.9L six cylinder that produces an astonishing 500hp.

The extra power will be apparent to the driver, whether moving from a standing position or accelerating through traffic. It is responsive to the softest nudge of the gas pedal. The 8-speed automatic transmission ensures the power is not wasted. In 0-60 testing, the Stelvio reaches 60 in 5.7 seconds, a full half-second ahead of the Q5. In this area, the Alfa Romeo wins the competition.

Handling

The Q5 handles very well for an SUV, with effortless steering and excellent traction through its all-wheel-drive configuration. The Q5 provides Comfort and Dynamic driving modes, depending on the road and driver preferences. It handles well enough on curves and through heavy traffic.

With one drive, it is apparent that a sports car manufacturer designed this SUV. The double wishbone suspension is engineered to provide a 50/50 weight balance between the front and rear axles; when the balance begins to shift while cornering, computer controlled monitors redistribute additional torque to the front drive wheels. Several drive modes are available, including Sport and Race mode. For handling, Alfa Romeo has emphasized the “sport” in its sport utility vehicle. For handling, cornering, and responsive feel, the Stelvio shines over the Q5.

Styling

In an age of standard looking crossover SUV’s, styling may take on a secondary role. But in this case, appearances come to the forefront. The Q5 brings an understated handsomeness with subtle lines and gentle curves. It is designed in the simple but aesthetically pleasing manner of many Audi vehicles of the past and present.

The Stelvio is designed to be distinctive and stick out in a crowd. The classic Alfa Romeo delta shaped grille, the wider dam grille below, the hood mounted air vents, and teardrop headlights give the Stelvio an eye-catching grin. Crisp lines lead the eye to the rear; the dual or quad exhaust pipes give a hint of the power the vehicle possesses. As with its acceleration and handling, the Stelvio incorporates sports cars features in a compact SUV. Breaking the crossover mold for appearance gives the Stelvio the advantage over the Q5.

Ron Lewis Alfa Romeo is proud to carry the Stelvio models as a part of our Alfa Romeo line of vehicles. We feel this SUV is a vehicle that sells itself, but we are happy to educate our buyers on its numerous features. The test drive is the actual selling tool for the Stelvio because its performance speaks volumes.
